Choosing a payment provider is one of the few operating decisions a dispensary makes that touches revenue, cash handling, reporting, and staff time all at once. Yet many operators evaluate providers on a single number and discover the rest only after they have signed. This is a practical framework for evaluating a cannabis payment partner before you commit.

Start with the complete economics, not one number

The headline rebate is only part of the picture. The real comparison is your rebate net of monthly operating fees, equipment cost, and the time your team spends servicing the arrangement. A provider that pays a slightly higher rebate but charges monthly fees can leave you worse off than one with no monthly operating fee. Ask for the full economics in writing.

Rebate: is it competitive, and how is it set?

A rebate should reflect your actual transaction volume and structure. Be cautious of a single universal rate advertised to everyone; a serious provider evaluates your volume and configures the rebate to it. What matters is that the method is transparent and the number is competitive for your operation.

Funding clarity beats vague speed claims

“Next-day” and “within 24 hours” sound reassuring but are hard to reconcile. A published, business-day deposit schedule you can predict is more valuable than an unverifiable speed claim. Ask exactly which day a Monday transaction is deposited, and how weekends and bank holidays are handled.

Equipment, reporting, and support

Confirm what equipment you receive, on what terms, and who owns it. Ask how transactions are reported and whether you can verify activity against your deposits. And ask what support looks like after installation: which hours, and the difference between technical support and your account team.

Read the cancellation terms first

The easiest time to understand how a relationship ends is before it begins. Understand any lease term, what happens to equipment if you cancel, who pays return shipping, and how equipment is inspected. Clear terms are a sign of a provider that intends to earn the relationship.

If you want a structured second opinion on your current arrangement, that is exactly what a payment review is for.
